Voter Registration Requirements

To Vote You Must Register

In order to register to vote you must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years old at the time of the next November election (17 year-olds may register if they will be 18 by the next Election Day)
  • Resident of Greenwich
  • U.S. citizen

When first registering, you must be able to prove your identity and residency. Typically this is done with a driver’s license or other preprinted photo identification (ID) (e.g., employee ID or school ID, for example), current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, etc, along with the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. If there is no ID or other proof submitted and we can not verify you via your Social Security number or other info, you may be asked to step out of line at the polls to present proper identification. For your convenience, we suggest sending the required proof of residency and identity in advance so your experience on voting day is speedy.

Deadlines

There are deadlines for voter registration. Registration is closed 7 days before each election and/or primary. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked 7 days before the election or primary.

If you are unable to register in advance, election day registration is available. Please review this opportunity for residents who have missed all other deadlines.

To Enroll in a Political Party

You may enroll in a party when you become an elector or at any time either online or at the Registrars of Voters office.
You may change party affiliation at any time; but you cannot vote in a party caucus or primary or be eligible for party privileges for three months following a change from one party-to another.

If you are not a member of a political party, you are listed as “Unaffiliated” on the voter lists. You can enroll (affiliate) with a party up to noon on the day before a primary in person.
