FROM THE CAMPAIGN OFJONATHAN GOLDSTEIN · 150TH DISTRICT

“The election is over, but the issues facing Greenwich families have not gone away.”

Jonathan Goldstein, Republican candidate, 150th DistrictGREENWICH, CT — Following Tuesday’s election, Jonathan Goldstein, Republican candidate for Connecticut’s 150th House District, congratulated State Representative Steve Meskers on his reelection and called for cooperation on the issues affecting Greenwich and Connecticut.

“Last night, I called Steve Meskers to congratulate him on his victory. I would welcome the opportunity to sit down together, discuss the issues raisedthroughout this campaign, and find common ground on making Greenwich and Connecticut better.

“We often hear that all politics is local. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that was the case last night. This election appeared to be driven more by reactions to national politics than by the local issues affecting Greenwich families every day.

“I knocked on more than 4,000 doors during this campaign. I listened to parents, seniors, renters, homeowners and small-business owners. Their concerns were about rising electricity bills, housing costs, education, sewage in Long Island Sound, and Hartford’s increasing control over local decisions.

“That is how our ‘Just Greenwich’  message was born: Affordability, Beaches and Local Control.

“Those concerns did not disappear when the polls closed. I sincerely hope they will not be ignored in Hartford.”

Respect the Fiscal Guardrails. Connecticut Families Cannot Afford More.

Goldstein expressed concern that the election results could leave Hartford with even less political balance and fewer checks on state spending.

“With less balance in Hartford, I am concerned about the possibility of further capital flight as residents, businesses and investment dollars seek more competitive states.

“I urge Governor Lamont and the Democratic supermajority to begin the next legislative session with a comprehensive review of Connecticut’s budget, eliminate waste and inefficiencies, and, most importantly, respect the fiscal guardrails established to protect taxpayers and Connecticut’s financial future.

“The fiscal guardrails are not political inconveniences to be circumvented whenever Hartford wants to spend more money. They are commitments to fiscal discipline and long-term stability.

“Before considering another tax, fee, mandate or spending increase, Hartford must demonstrate that existing taxpayer dollars are being spent efficiently and responsibly.”

“The people I met at their doors and on the streets cannot afford another round of cost increases. Connecticut cannot simply keep asking families to pay more while failing to control spending.”

“Fiscal responsibility is not a Republican or Democratic issue. It is an obligation to every Connecticut resident and to the next generation that will inherit the consequences of today’s decisions.”

Women’s Economic Equality and Domestic Violence Prevention Must Be Priorities

Goldstein also highlighted two issues that became deeply personal during his campaign: domestic violence and economic opportunities for Connecticut women.

“One of the most meaningful experiences of this campaign was learning from people whose lives have been affected by domestic violence. The stories I heard at Greenwich doorsteps changed my understanding of the issue and strengthened my commitment to doing something about it.

“Domestic violence is a serious problem in Greenwich and throughout Connecticut. Awareness is important, but awareness without prevention and action is not enough.”

“We need education, early intervention, access to services and greater economic independence for those at risk. This is a commitment I intend to continue beyond this election.”

Goldstein also called on Governor Lamont and the Democratic legislative majority to investigate the troubling decline in women’s relative earnings in Connecticut.

“Six years ago, figures showed Connecticut women earning approximately 97 cents for every dollar earned by men. More recent figures suggest that women’s median weekly earnings are approximately 79 cents on the dollar.”

“While these figures require careful comparison to account for differences in measurement, the underlying concern deserves immediate attention.

“Why are Connecticut women losing economic ground, and why are we not seeing the same apparent deterioration in neighboring states such as New York?

“Economic independence is also an important part of domestic violence prevention. Financial insecurity can make it more difficult for someone to leave an abusive relationship.

“I urge Governor Lamont and the Democratic supermajority to undertake a serious review of women’s economic opportunities, earnings inequality and the policies necessary to restore progress toward equal pay.

“Women’s economic equality should not be a partisan talking point. It should be a measurable priority of state government.”

The Campaign Is Over. My Commitment to Greenwich Is Not.

Goldstein thanked the voters, volunteers and residents who participated in his campaign, including those who disagreed with him politically.

“The most meaningful part of this campaign was not the speeches or debates. It was meeting people at their doors, hearing their stories, and understanding the challenges they face.

“I entered this race as an attorney and someone who works in construction, believing that practical experience and a willingness to challenge Hartford could make a difference. I leave this campaign having learned even more from the people of Greenwich.

“To those who supported me, thank you. To those who voted differently, I respect your decision. And to Steve Meskers, I again extend my congratulations and an invitation to work together where we can.

“I hope the next legislative session focuses less on partisan victories and more on delivering results for the people of Connecticut.

“I will continue speaking up for responsible spending, fiscal guardrails, fair education funding, clean beaches, local control, women’s economic opportunities and domestic violence prevention.

“The election is over. Our responsibility to Greenwich is not.

“Not Red. Not Blue. Just Greenwich.”
