Federalism and the Case for Republican Rule

In the past two weeks’ essays about Federalism, we saw how the Constitution turns our fifty states into laboratories of democracy. Federalism lets states test varied approaches to taxes, regulation, spending, and policy—spreading successes while containing failures.

The record shows that low-tax, business-friendly environments (such as those in Texas, Florida, and Tennessee) have attracted residents and jobs, while high-tax states like California, New York, and Massachusetts can thrive only when paired with strong institutions and industries. Fiscal discipline, sound budgeting, and prudent management of long-term obligations have proven critical to resilience. Most telling of all, Americans continue to vote with their feet—migrating in growing numbers toward states that offer greater affordability, opportunity, and quality of life.
